Hello VAbirders,
Did everyone have a lot of birds this morning? White Oaks had the loudest
most diverse chorus of the year so far, with 10 or so species of warbler,
and rose-breasted grosbeak. Late spring is officially here, as this is
the first day that blackpolls (9) have outnumbered yellow-rumps (7). I
bet Monticello was great today.

You betcha! A wave struck our little garden yesterday. It snuck up on me
too, things seemed so quiet at first. Then at about 7:10 I heard what
sounded like a Black-throated Blue warbler....or was that a Black-throated
Green warbler? Turns out it was both! Black-throated Blue - 2,
Black-throated Green - 3.
And then...
FOD Chimney Swift. I've been waiting for their sweet chittering.
And then........
Yellow warbler - 2
Red-eyed vireo - 3
Baltimore Oriole - male sitting in the sun. Only the second time ever in
our yard!
Swainson's Thrush - up in the trees instead of on the ground...probably
because the fox was hunting all morning long, chasing squirrels like crazy
and missing, unfortunately. (Probably desperate to feed his/her kits.)
Nashville warbler - low to ground in a tangle of shrubs and vines
American Redstart - 2-3?
Yellow-rumped - of course! about 12
And at one point as I was hanging out the window our female hum came up and
stared at me, from about 1 1/2' away. I said, "Oh don't come in here,
there are cats in here!"
Then later, a MALE hum went by, so our female hum has company...hot dog!
Surfing the wave was glorious, almost exhausting! By 10:00am I was late
for my first appointment, so had to leave, but I surely didn't want to go.
Also, the day before yesterday we got a flock of 15-20 Cedar Waxwings, a
single Black-throated Blue warb, a single Red-eyed Vireo, and 3
Rose-breasted Grosbeaks (2 male/1 female). The Grosbeaks were feeding at
our sunflower chips feeder!
