Greetings,
While working on the Northern Va. Bird Survey this morning, I found a
juvenile White Ibis at a very small pond at the "defunct shopping center." I
watched the bird from 7:30 to 8:00, during which time the bird alternated
between the pond and a dead tree along Young's Branch. When I first spotted
it, I knew it was some kind of juv. ibis, but didn't know which one. When I
got back to the car, I checked Sibley, and lo and behold, there was "my"
young juv. (Jun-Jul) White Ibis. What was equally amazing to me was the fact
that the bird was at such a tiny pond! I really wasn't expecting to find
anything there.
The defunct shopping center is located along Groveton Rd. From the Rt 234/Rt
29 intersection go west for 1.3 miles, then turn left (south) onto Groveton
Rd. From this intersection go .7 mile to the pull-off area on the right for
the Battlefield. To get to the pond from the little pull-off, you must walk
all the way to the end of the parking lot. From there, turn left (south) and
head for the willow trees where the pond is located.
