I was rather startled this morning as I heard a loud "thud" against our
large balcony window, and when I whirled around to see what happened, I
saw a pigeon-sized bird flying away and some feathers whirling around.
"Oh, guess he saw the sky in the glass," I thought, and returned to my
work.
Later, however, my husband said, "Is that a dead bird on the balcony?"
and when I went over to investigate, there was the body of a sparrow just
under where the noise had come from. I said, "Well, I guess I'll i.d..
it and then dispose of it; " but, upon returning from a closer look,
said, "It's hard to tell what it is as it has no head!"
And then the light dawned: Obviously a small hawk, i.e. sharp-shinned,
had been carrying the hapless sparrow and slammed into our window,
dropping his partially-eaten lunch on our balcony. Man; a major bird
event happening right under my nose and I was oblivious! I guess I'll
have to keep my eyes peeled this coming spring when I'm eating lunch out
there -- don't want any feathers or other body parts in my soup.^_^
