A dead crow found by my wife in our neighbors backyard tested positive for the
West Nile Virus. It is only the 17th crow in fairfax County from over 400
tested to show positive for the virus, according to the county Public Health
Service. Several thousand mosquitoes collected in the county tested negative.
Nonetheless, as a precautionary measure, the Public Health Service will treat
all the sewer lines within a half mile radius of our home (6722 FERN LANE).
On a happier note, post-breeding dispersal is in full swing. Three Wood
Thrushes have arrived in the wooded area behind our home over the past three
days. Several breeding birds, including Eastern Towhees, Blue-gray
Gnatcatchers, and several species of woodpeckers, have fledged youngsters in
the neighborhood. We also had a pair of Acadian Flycatchers present since 10
May. Never found a nest, but this evening I found an adult Acadian feeding two
healthy fledglings. I expect young hummingbirds shortly. A fine way to begin
the weekend!
