Hello VAbirders!
If you don't mind looking like a freak, you can also wear full bug netting
over your clothes. This stuff is nice because you can wear shorts and
still get the breeze through the netting.

A freak? No way, when I wear my bug net jacket I feel like a trend
setter!!! When I birded some very buggy High Island areas of the Texas
coast in April quite a few birders asked me where I got my jacket. I
probably could have sold it for double the price I paid for it! ;-)
Btw, when I bird an extra-buggy place I spray the hooded jacket with Cutter
or some such bug spray and that protects most of the upper part of me. I
spray my legs directly. Eventually perhaps I'll invest in net pants as
well. Have you ever noticed that just when you are focusing on a special
bird a mosquito or fly bites your hands? Infuriating! My latest find is a
pair of net gloves that covers most of your hands, leaving only the
fingertips exposed. Perhaps I'll foil those blood-sucking varmints yet!
Sources:
I got my bug jacket from Campmor for $19.99. I got my bug gloves from Lee
Valley for $5.99. Lee Valley also carries Deer Fly patches. Supposedly
you stick them on the back of your birding cap and the flies are attracted
to the patch instead of to you and then get stuck on the sticky
patch. Having long hair I thought it better to pass them by and simply
spray my hat instead. But if you have short hair, they might be worth a try.
