State Senator Patsy Ticer's newsletter published this week included
this report which likely will be regarded as good news by many, if not
most, Virginia birders.
A bill by Del. Cox regarding waterfowl sanctuaries fortunately did not
pass. It would have repealed a number of Acts of the Assembly which
provide for waterfowl sanctuaries in various localities. Among the
provisions which would have been repealed by this bill are the
prohibition on hunting from floating blinds in the Counties of
Caroline, King George, Essex, Westmoreland, and in several segments of
the Rappahannock and Potomac Rivers. Many property owners came to the
committee to oppose the bill and spoke eloquently about the need for
conservation of the waterfowl and their need for rest areas. I am
afraid the bill will reappear in another form next year, but we were
able to gently lay it to rest this time.
