I headed out this morning to look for migrants. The morning started out well,
but by 11am the birds became very quiet. I drove a few county roads north of
Lexington without finding too much. On Hyde Rd, just after you turn onto Hyde
from Decautar Rd, there are Purple Martins. I saw a pair flying over one of
the fields north of the house. Purple Martins are not common in Rockbridge Co,
so it's a treat to find them.
On Raphine Rd just after turning onto it from RT 252, I found some Northern
Rough-winged Swallows along the creek and head/saw a single Bobolink in the
area. Also, there was a pair of Eastern Kingbirds there. At McCormick's Farm
in Raphine, there was a pair of Baltimore Orioles in the trees around the front
pond. I had a calling Bobolink fly over me near the mill, but I never found it
again. Along the nature trail by the back pond there were 2 Northern
Waterthrushes.
Up on the Parkway, there were many Ovenbirds, Redstarts, Worm-eating, Pine
Warblers. I heard several Black-throated Blues, so they are here in numbers.
Near mile post 37 I found a Cerulean Warbler, Hooded Warbler, and
Black-throated Green Warbler. In addition, there were Scarlet Tanagers, Wood
Thrushes, and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. I heard my first Pewees today.
I've posted a few photos, if you are interested
