All,
On May 14 (International Migratory Bird Day) the Coastal Virginia Wildlife
Observatory (CVWO) is sponsoring its second annual bird count of lower
Northampton County. We will once again try to replicate, in May, the Cape
Charles Christmas Bird Count. For those of you who may not be familiar with it,
the Cape Charles CBC count circle is centered near Capeville and covers the
entire southern tip from Oyster and Cape Charles down to Fisherman Island and a
little of the bay on the west and the Atlantic on the east. It's a big
territory, so we can use all the help we can get. In 2004, with just 7
participants, we counted over 120 species.
We will do all we can to accomodate requests for particular territories. Those
of you who have participated in the Cape Charles CBC and are therefore familiar
with the roads, know what properties are accessible and where the birds are
most likely to be found are most especially welcome.
We are working on arrangements to transport birders out to some of the barrier
islands. Seats will be limited, so it would be first come, first served for
that part of the count. Access to several areas covered in December will be
limited in May due to the presence of nesting birds or for other reasons, but
we intend to cover as much of the territory as possible to make our data
comparable to the CBC results.
Please look at your calendar and let me know if you can participate. I can best
be reached at tsaunders53 at yahoo dot com, or 757 373-0076.
Yours,
Tom Saunders
CVWO MBD count coordinator
