This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday,
March 6.

Top birds this week are THICK-BILLED MURRE* in MD and VA, DOVEKIE and
RAZORBILL in VA.

Other birds of interest include geese, ducks, RED-NECKED GREBE, EARED
GREBE, AMERICAN BITTERN, YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERON, OSPREY, MERLIN,
AMERICAN WOODCOCK, gulls, SHORT-EARED OWL, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, TREE
SWALLOW, PINE WARBLER, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, BREWER'S
BLACKBIRD and BALTIMORE ORIOLE.

The THICK-BILLED MURRE* first seen on Feb 22 in and near the inlet at
Ocean City, Worcester Co, MD was seen on Feb 27, 28, and March 1.  It
is also seen in the man-made canal that connects with the inlet across
Rte 50 from Hoopers Crab House. Perhaps the same alcid was seen on
March 3 and 4 in the inlet and the canal but was not positively
identified. A possible THICK-BILLED MURRE was seen at Island 3 of the
Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, Northampton Co, VA, on March 3.

Also on Island 3 of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel were a DOVEKIE
and three RAZORBILLS on March 3.

Geese and ducks are still widespread across the area but movement
north is underway.

A CACKLING GOOSE was found on March 3 near the intersection of
Worthington Av and Tufton Av in Baltimore Co, MD.

EURASIAN WIGEON was reported from a number of locations. One continued
to be seen at Eagle's Landing Golf Course, Worcester Co, MD. A drake
was seen along Cold Bottom Road near Belfast, Baltimore Co, MD on
March 4 and 5. Another EURASIAN WIGEON was at the Chesapeake Bay
Environmental Center, Grasonville, Queen Anne's Co, MD on March 3.

Two HARLEQUIN DUCKS and at least one COMMON EIDER were observed at the
Ocean City, MD, inlet jetty on March 3.

A RED-NECKED GREBE was found in Washington Channel, Washington, DC, on
March 4.  Another was seen along Old Rehoboth Road and Rehoboth
Branch, Somerset Co, MD on March 4. A RED-NECKED GREBE was seen near
the Ocean City, MD Coast Guard Station on Feb 28. Single RED-NECKED
GREBES were seen on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel on March 3 and
Indian River inlet, Sussex Co, DE on March 4. An EARED GREBE was
spotted at Point Lookout State Park, St. Marys Co, MD on March 3.

An AMERICAN BITTERN was at Eastern Neck NWR, Kent Co, MD on March 3. A
YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT HERON was found near the parking lot on
Pennyfield Lock Road, Montgomery Co, MD on March 3.

OSPREYS were reported across the region, a sure sign of spring.

MERLINS entertained observers at Hains Point and at Connecticut and M
St NW, Washington, DC on March 1 and 2.

Display flights of AMERICAN WOODCOCKS were reported from many
locations across the area. An injured WOODCOCK was found at the
Washington, DC, Convention Center on March 1.

A LAUGHING GULL was at the Ocean City inlet on March 4. A second-year
ICELAND GULL was at the Indian River inlet, Sussex Co, DE on Feb 28.
An adult ICELAND GULL and a first-year GLAUCOUS GULL were found on
Fowler Beach, Sussex Co, DE on March 4.

Three SHORT-EARED OWLS were found along Rt 140 a mile east of Rt 15 in
Frederick Co, MD on March 5.

A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was seen one-quarter mile north of Boyce, Clarke
Co, VA on March 4. Another LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was seen near Swoope,
Augusta Co, VA on Feb 28.

Confirming the imminent arrival of spring were numerous reports of
TREE SWALLOWS from everywhere in the region.

PINE WARBLERS were spotted in several locations in MD and VA.

On Feb 27, five LAPLAND LONGSPURS were found along Lilypons Rd near Rt
85 in Frederick Co, MD, among a flock of 200 Horned Larks.

A dozen RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were feeding at the Blandy Experimental Farm,
Clarke Co, VA on March 3. A male BREWER'S BLACKBIRD was reported at a
feeder in Middletown, Baltimore Co, MD on March 1.

A pair of BALTIMORE ORIOLES have been in residence at Shirley
Plantation, Charles City Co, VA for the month of February.
