This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday,
January 30.
Top birds this week are WOOD STORK* in VA and THAYER'S GULL in VA.
Other birds of interest include geese, ducks, RING-NECKED PHEASANT,
RED-THROATED LOON, falcons, PURPLE SANDPIPERS, ICELAND, LESSER
BLACK-BACKED, and GLACOUS GULL, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, RED-HEADED
WOODPECKER, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, NORTHERN SHRIKE, COMMON RAVEN,
OVENBIRD, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, sparrows, RUSTY and BREWER'S BLACKBIRD.
The WOOD STORK at First Landing SP, Virginia Beach, VA was last seen
on Jan 23.
A likely THAYER'S GULL was observed at the Prince William Co Landfill
on Jan 27.
Two GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and a CACKLING GOOSE were seen either
on or near a farm pond on Sturdy Rd (DeLorme 73B6 - please stay on the
road) in Carroll Co, MD, on Jan 25, 26, and 28. A ROSS'S GOOSE
continues at the Merkle WMA, Prince George's Co, MD. Four CACKLING
GEESE were found along Wilson Rd in northern Cecil Co, MD on Jan 28. A
CACKLING GOOSE was also found at Pickering Creek, Talbot Co, MD on Jan
28.
The EURASIAN WIGEON at the Eagle's Nest Golf Course pond, Worcester
Co, MD was seen again on January 28.
Two drake HARLEQUIN DUCKS were seen Jan 23 from Island #1 of the
Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel islands (CBBT), Northampton Co, VA.
An observer was surprised to see a RING-NECKED PHEASANT in the
vicinity of the Patton Turf Farm off of River Rd not far from Whites
Ferry, Montgomery Co, MD on Jan 25.
A RED-THROATED LOON was found in Washington D.C.'s Tidal Basin on Jan
26.
A MERLIN was seen at Lake Roland, Baltimore Co, MD on Jan 25. Another
MERLIN visited a backyard in Darnestown, Montgomery Co, MD on Jan 26.
A PEREGRINE FALCON continues to be seen from an office complex in the
Baileys Crossroads area of Fairfax Co, VA.
Four PURPLE SANDPIPERS were seen from Island #1 of the CBBT on Jan 23.
An ICELAND GULL, probably a first winter bird, and 5 LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULLS, including 1 first winter bird, were found at the
Fauquier Co Landfill on Jan 27. Two LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were
found at the Prince William, VA Landfill on Jan 27. Another LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL was found at the Beaverdam Reservoir, Loudoun Co
that same day. A GLAUCOUS GULL and a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL were
seen at the Prince William Landfill on Jan 28.
An adult female RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD that was caught for banding on Jan
27 in Timberville, Rockingham Co, VA turned out to have been
originally banded in Pinckard, AL on Jan 4, 2006.
As usual, RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were seen at Sky Meadows SP, Fauquier
Co, VA this past week with a report from January 29. At least one was
seen at Hughes Hollow, Montgomery Co, MD on Jan 28.
Two LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES were found near Edinburg, Shenandoah Co, VA on
Jan 27. The first was on Headquarters Rd about ¼ mile north of South
Middle Rd; the other was on Belgravia Rd about ¼ mile south of South
Middle Rd. The LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE reported from the Central Loudoun Co
CBC east of Rte 15 and a couple of miles south of Oatlands Plantation
was seen Jan 27 in the same area.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen on Boog Rd (off of Cape Horn Rd, which runs
between Rte 482 and Rte 30, between Hampstead and Manchester) in
Carroll Co, MD, on Jan 25. It has not been relocated since then.
COMMON RAVENS continue to be seen away from the mountains with a
report of one at the Prince William Landfill on Jan 27 and another in
Bethesda, MD on Jan 29.
An OVENBIRD continues at the Ripley Garden, DC with a sighting on
January 25. A COMMON YELLOWTHROAT also continues to be seen at
Occoquan Bay NWR with the most recent sighting on Jan 27.
On January 27, two AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS and 25 SNOW BUNTINGS were
observed on Hart-Miller Island, Baltimore Co, MD. The CLAY-COLORED
SPARROW on Bulle Rocke Parkway about 0.5 miles from Rte 155, Harford
Co, MD was seen on January 24 and 27.
A LINCOLN'S SPARROW has been visiting a backyard in Boonsboro,
Washington Co, MD for the last three weeks. A single LAPLAND LONGSPUR
was found Jan 25 with a small flock of HORNED LARKS on Hope Rd in the
area between Rte 301 and Ruthsburg, Queen Anne's County, MD.
A flock of about 25 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS and 2 probable BREWER'S
BLACKBIRDS were seen Jan 28 near Nokesville, Prince William Co, on
Parkgate Rd close to the stream crossing. Four RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were
found on the weekly bird walk at Dyke Marsh, Fairfax Co, VA, on Jan
28.
