I participated in the Kiptopeke Challenge on Sept. 17 as part of the
Northern Virginia Bird Club's Wandering Siskins. More details will
follow, but I just wanted to report some of the good birds we saw. In
all, we tallied 140 species, making it the best fall birding day I have
ever had. And that was without the benefit of a major flight (which
occurred the next day).
White ibis - 10+ at Eastern Shore NWR.
Gull-billed tern - adult feeding two juveniles at the public boat
launch at Red Bank, off of Rt. 600 just south of Willis Wharf.
Marbled Godwit - 20+ at Oyster and 1 at Chincoteague NWR on the 17th.
Hudsonian Godwit - 2 in Swan Cove at Chincoteague on the 16th and
17th.
Baird's sandpiper - 2 seen the Wildlife Drive at Chinc. on the 16th,
one seen on the 17th. On the 16th the birds were close to the road in
perfect light. Super looks.
American Golden Plover - one in adult plumage in dried-up Snow Goose
Pool on the 16th and 17th.
Lesser Black-backed gull - adult in Snow Goose Pool on the 16th and
17th.
Gray-cheeked thrush - 2 giving flight calls over Saxis Marsh on Sept.
17.
Red-breasted nuthatch - coming to feeder at Kiptopeke State Park on the
16th and 17th.
