Congratulations to Alan Schreck and Linda Fields, editors, and the nine
regional editors, Bob Ake, Fred Atwood, Mike Boatwright, Adam D'Onofrio,
Kurt Gaskill, Lynda and Roger Mayhorn, John Spahr, and Mike Stinson for
their hard work and great job in bringing us the first issue of
"Virginia Birds: A quarterly journal of ornithological sightings in the
Commonwealth published by the Virginia Society of Ornithology". My copy
arrived a few days ago with the most recent issue of "The Raven" and VSO
Newsletter, and it's a treat to be able to read regional summaries of
last summer's sightings. We are long overdue in having something like
this to help document and interpret bird distribution in Virginia and
learn more about both our local turf and other regions we are less
familiar with. As Todd Day points out in this issue's lead article
preceding the regional reports, "Virginia Birds" should spur us on in
documenting what we are finding in the field, and I'm sure regional
editors will welcome everything we can send their way.
Consider joining the VSO if you are not already a member so you can
receive "Virginia Birds" through this year. I believe the plan after
the first year is for the publication be be supported on a subscription
basis. Many thanks are due to the VSO for funding "Virginia Birds" in
its first year so that it can get off the ground.
