Birders,
Having made it out of DC to avoid the crowds, I was in the center of Vienna
near the intersection behind the Giant, which I think is Glyndon Street,
bemoaning the fact that I have not even seen any starlings licking chewing gum
off the road, when a seriously dramatic hawk show unfolded before me.
I thought I had been hallucinating since I had not had dinner...
Within just seconds, a hawk positively glided down from a perch which had to
be a hundred yards away, and rapidly overtook a bird which I suspect was a
mockingbird or starling, in some trees. He was smooth and did not break his
stride, streaking off through some undercover in front of a newly built house,
and swung gracefully back up to the old tall tree from which he originated. He
seemed to be a red shoulder. I did not see what he obtained, because he got
out of the area so fast.
Beautiful show.
