I managed to get out in the fields and park lands in the
neighborhood a bit over the last couple of days here in Vienna. I found =
the
woods full of singing RUBY CROWNED KINGLETS, at least a dozen, with more =
at
the house.=20
In Fox Stone/ Waverly Park I found a singing WHITE EYED VIREO moving
thru the low brush from one side of the path to the other, allowing me =
great
close-up views without even needing bins.=20
At home a BLUE HEADED VIREO was feeding in the middle of a pine
tree, in the same spot I saw one last fall.=20
Down in the park, which is basically the flood plain of the creek, I
found two WINTER WRENS skulking among stumps and logs.=20
At RUBY THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, a male, briefly visited the feeder
here in the yard this morning. This is 2 days earlier than last year and =
13
days earlier than 2003. I hang a feeder on a "Kroger hook" with a =
Fuchsia
plant.=20
Yesterday I found a PINE WARBLER and OVEN BIRD and as I walked up
the hill onto the field, I noticed a BARRED OWL momentarily perched atop =
one
of my Bluebird boxes. It immediately moved up into one the pines =
surrounding
the field, to the great relief of the Bluebirds nesting inside! I =
suspect
the owl must have a hungry family to feed, to be hunting during =
daylight.=20
BROWN THRASHERS and TOWHEES seemed almost abundant today. I have
also noted that AMERICAN ROBINS are hanging out in the yard more than in
past years. I have at least two pairs that appear to be nest building.=20
Lots of WHITE THROATED SPARROWS, CHIPPING SPARROWS and a few DARK
EYED JUNCOS are still here. They all like the cracked corn I spread on =
the
ground each morning.=20
Enjoy the birds!
