Having been called into work and cheated out of a nice day at Snicker's
yesterday, Paula Sullivan and I went birding today (2 Nov) along the Hike-Bike
Trail at Huntley (Fairfax County) looking for sparrows. We primarily birded
the area near the brush piles between the main and back meadows. The Vesper
Sparrow was found in the wet area in the new meadow recently created between
the main and back meadows where the Northern Va. Bird Club-sponsored woodcock
walks are held in March. This is only the second Vesper Sparrow that I have
seen at Huntley in about 15 years.
Other sparrows consisted of Eastern Towhees (5), White-throated (at least 25),
Swamp (6 to 8), and Field (1). Golden-crowned Kinglets were evident near the
maintenance bldg. and the Hike-Bike trail (6). A handful of Yellow-rumps were
the only warblers present.
