I hear this call in the fields behind my house frequently and occassionally I
will see the Great Horned Owl that lives somewhere in the woods nearby. I have
yet to locate a roost or nest. Anyway I second your id call.

Thanks for all the replies. The most common response was Great Horned Owl,
but several other owl species were suggested as well as foxes. After
listening to some more recordings, I'm certain that the bird was a Great
Horned Owl. This recording is almost an exact match:

During the Banister CBC on Sunday at Staunton River State Park, Adam
D'Onofrio and I heard a call before sunrise that neither of us was familiar
with. By the time it got light enough to see, the bird had stopped, and we
were unable to locate it. At the time we didn't think fast enough to make a
recording. This morning I went back in hopes that it would still be in the
area. Luckily, it was calling when I arrived near the same location. I
made a couple videos of the call and posted them here:

The bird made the same call continuously for about an hour. The note is
repeated about every 10 - 15 seconds. The only variation was a note that
was slightly lower in volume and less forceful, but on a very similar pitch.
Just as it was beginning to get light enough to see some gunshots went off
in the distance, and I caught a glimpse of a silhouette moving through the
canopy. Only silence after that.
Any thoughts on the id are welcome.
