I just spoke to a Washington Post reporter who reached out to us at the
Northern Virginia Bird Club. He is doing a story on the grebes and is basing
it on what the police say. I told him that the birds were actually Horned
Grebes, not Eared Grebes and that the Wildlife Center of Virginia has recently
rescued five Horned Grebes in other areas of Virginia. It will be interesting
to see what ends up in the story.

Bird
When the black pavement is wet, they think it is water and then are stranded
and
cannot take off. I know of one, an eared grebe, that was found on a highway in
fairfax city area this week. Had a severely injured eye and was in the hands of
a vet. Probably had to be euthanized.

The bird in the press release is a Horned Grebe, not an Eared Grebe. I'm
assuming the Fairfax County Wildlife Biologist is just misidentifying them?
Seems like a fallout of Eared Grebe would be quite unusual for VA...

Report “Lost” Birds
Animal Control officers have received several reports of “downed” birds
and ask residents to be alert and aware of the issue. Likely thrown off
their migratory track due to recent frigid weather, the Eared Grebes are
being found around the county.
They have webbed feet and are typically birds that swim and fly; and are
not accustomed to walking so they appear wobbly or injured. The Fairfax
County Wildlife Biologist identified the birds.
Police are coordinating with local veterinarians and the Wildlife Rescue
League for a humane re-location of the birds.
Anyone who sees the Eared Grebes should call for an Animal Control
at 703-691-4131.to
