VA Birders,
I would like to call your attention to two rare bird reports submitted
via the internet by Ed Talbott.
They are:
Report submitted to VARCOM for the Red Phalarope in Montgomery Co., VA
on October 4, 2003:
http://www.bcplnet.org/birdclub/events/RedPhalarope.htm
Report submitted to VARCOM for the Sabine's Gull in Washington Co., VA
on September 7, 2003:
http://www.bcplnet.org/birdclub/events/SGull/SabineReport.htm
These birds were excellently documented by Ed and because of his
diligence in putting them on the internet, VARCOM was able to review
these records in a mere two weeks. I am happy to say that both were
accepted as category 1 records (the highest level of acceptance,
requires a photo, sound recording or other physical evidence) and both
represent the first records of these species in the Mountains and
Valleys region for Virginia. I realize that not everyone has the access
or knowledge to document birds in this way but I wanted to point out how
much easier and faster records can be reviewed if they are submitted
this way. If you have submitted records in paper form, you know that it
takes 6-12 months (or longer) to get them through the process. So kudos
to Ed and if you have the ability to document records in this way,
VARCOM welcomes the chance to review them over the internet. We are
moving ever so slowly into the computer age!
Happy Halloween to all.
Sue
