Sigh.....

First, I am late responding to the C. Jones attack of Lori Markoff because I
was out of town, without Internet access since Wednesday morning.

The first issue is the very troubling C. Jones email.
I share the community abhorrence of the C.Jones post.  He/she has not
responded to my offline email.  This was a direct personal attack and has no
place on VA-Bird.

I will deal with posters who lack self control, are seeking attention and/or
cannot communicate in a mature manner.  First offense is a two week
suspension from posting; second is a ban from VA-Bird.  However, you must
know that the type of person who is conducting themselves in this manner can
get around the restrictions.

Second issue is the thread on VA-Bird that followed the C. Jones post.
I ask the entire community to let me deal with uncivil conduct.  If this
person was seeking attention, we gave it to them.  Email me, not the list
serve, with your outrage.  Email Lori with your thoughts.  Email me BEFORE
posting anything that may add fuel, or start a new outbreak.

When contacting a list serve member offline, the same rules of civility
apply, and the penalties for outrageous behavior are the same.

The remaining issues are the appropriate use of VA-Bird.
Again, this list serve is for reporting bird sighting in the state of VA.
This is not exclusively a rare bird alert.  All levels of birders are
welcome to read and post.  Bird behavior, birding events, birding location
news and birding problems ("stay on the road, avoiding private property at
that location") are all appropriate.  We are a tolerant, inclusive
community.  I do (rarely) ask posters to curtail a thread, most times
offline.

I want to encourage all posters to do the following:

Subject - Please include the most important bird species or the geographic
area your post describes.
Message Body - Please capitalize fully all bird species in narrative.  (e.g.
"I saw three RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS today").
Signature Block - Please include your full name and location.
Attachments - Not allowed by our host, Freelists.

If a subset of the list membership want to start a discussion of VA-Bird
rules, email me at paulbirds19@xxxxxxxxxxx and I'll set up a mailing list
for that specific purpose.

Please keep posting VA bird related material to VA-Bird.  And PLEASE direct
any reaction to this post to my personal email account.  I don't want to
miss the BACHMAN'S WARBLER post on VA-Bird.

Now, back to the birds.  Why the dearth of reports from Monticello Park this
spring?

McLean, VA
Co-Owner, VA-Bird
