Still waiting for the first major nighthawk flight of the season, but
tonight, at least, had the highest counts at both of my VA locations, almost
doubling the previous highs.
At my regular watchsite at Van Dyck Park in Fairfax City I had 49 Common
Nighthawks and at Tyson's Corner in Fairfax Co at the nocturnal feeding area
over the Cable & Wireless buildings there were 50-60 at 9 PM.
At Van Dyck Park most of the nighthawks were in 4 small groups that
flew overhead to the north in a very direct and seemingly purposeful
anner( i.e. they knew were they were going). The two largest groups (16 &
10) were seen within 30 minutes of sunset. I still think these are birds
that have finished migration for the afternoon and are headed for nocturnal
feeding areas (lighting buildings, parking lots, stadia, etc)
