I am replying to your question on VA Birds in case there are others who have
the same question concerning Buchanan County and the VA Wildlife and Birding
Trail. Due to some confusion we did get our nominations in a bit late so the
map you see on the VDGIF is an old one and does not reflect our nominations.
However, we do have two sites that have been accepted for the trail. One is
the Horn Mountain - Compton Mountain section that runs right by my back
yard, where I saw the 65 migrant species last fall. 25 of those migrants
were warbler species. Here is the address if you want to take a look at it.

the Tazewell County Loop, but we have requested that it be added to the Pine
Mountain Loop, since that would entail less traveling time for birders
coming from the direction of the Breaks Interstate Park, which is already a
part of the Pine Mountain Loop. Another is the Poplar Gap Park which is also
a part of the Pine Mountain Loop. Here is the address for it.

some other areas and to gain public access to more trails that will be open
to birders in the near future. With the diversity of birds we have here the
Buchanan County Bird Club definitely wants Buchanan County to be a part of

In checking the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries web
site www.dgif.state.va.us, I saw that Buchanan County does not have any
sites nominated to be on the Southwest Virginia section of the Virginia
birding trail - the only county in Southwest Virginia not included. I
hope the Buchanan County Bird Club is working to rectify this omission.
I was looking forward to seeing Buchanan County on the Trail in order to
learn where the best birding sites were in that beautiful county.
