VA Birders,
Yesterday morning, while everything was still enclosed in fog, I heard a lot
of fluttering in the top of a maple in the yard. In the top I observed 8-10
Cedar Waxwings fluttering among the wet leaves. At first I thought they were
feeding, but there was nothing on the tree for them to feed on. Upon closer
examination I noticed that they were "tree bathing". They were fluttering
among the wet leaves until they got wet. They would then fly to a branch and
preen.
I had never noticed this behavior before. I never saw them eat anything
during this time, so I don't believe they were feeding.
