The participants (Alton Dick, Harry Glasgow, Charlie Creighton, Jim Waggener &
myself) of this morning's bird survey at Occoquan NWR were treated to the
spectacle of a hundred Bald Eagles (give or take a few) out on the ice of the
Potomac River. All of these eagles were in view at one time from the gazebo
overlook. (87 -- Charlie Creighton's count; 101-- my count; 107 -- Jim
Waggener's count).
Occoquan NWR is located at Woodbridge, VA, & is open to the general public on
Thursdays, Fridays, & weekends. If you are planning to visit the refuge,
please note that all but a few of these birds were out on the ice near the
middle of the river, which is quite broad at this point -- a scope is essential
for satisfactory viewing. The ice has also concentrated large rafts of Lesser
Scaup quite close to shore.
