This is a bit late, but I thought I'd report it anyway.
We spent about 3 hours Sunday at Tibbet's Knob. Although we were really hoping
for another encounter with the Yellow-rumped Warbler we found last week, we did
not find him. However, we did find a few birds we hadn't seen the week before,
but one notable miss was CHAT. Also, compared to last week, when we had 4-5
Black-capped Chicadees, this week we found none.
Best of all were the 8 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS. We were hearing them call at
different spots on the way up the mountain, and at one spot on top, we saw 4 in
the air at once (a pair of each together, at different altitudes, just riding
the thermals). Another addition was a single Ruby-throated Hummingbird.
Warblers (many have quieted down):
NORTHERN PARULA - 1 (quite unexpected, considering where he was)
Chestnut-sided - 3-4
Pine - not as many as last week
Prairie - also, not as many
Black-and-white - 2 or 3
Redstart - only 1
Worm-eating - 3-4
Ovenbird - 5
Common Yellowthroat - 4-6
Hooded - 2
Butterflies were abundant:
Great Spangled Fritillary - 1 group of over 50 (lots, everywhere else too)
Red-spotted Purple - common
Eastern Tiger Swallowtail - common
Silver-spotted Skipper - a few
The vehicular traffic was MUCH WORSE this week - in those 3 hours, we
encountered a total of 9 cars, as opposed to 3 last week! All that congestion
is just too much!
