Va Birders,
I met Jon Little at Thompson WMA this morning and we birded the lower
portion near the lake, the upper portion near parking lot #6 and along
Leeds Manor Road which leads to the lower portion. The Northern
Rough-winged Swallows and Belted Kingfishers have returned to their
breeding spot along Leeds Manor Road. There were 3 singing LA
Waterthrushes along the road and another at the lower portion of the
WMA. There weren't any warblers about other than that though. One BG
Gnatcatcher on the lower portion. The upper site had two Blue-headed
Vireos, a Winter Wren, my first Broad-winged Hawk of the year, many
Ruby-crowned Kinglets (one singing), several Golden-crowned Kinglets,
and a towhee in every bush or tangle.
There were violets and bloodroot blooming and lots of trillium getting
ready to bloomt. The place should be awash in wild flowers in another
week or so.
