VA BIRDers,
Rich Rieger and I visited Thompson WMA along Freezeland Rd this morning,
specifically the "catbird heaven" area which is the next to the last parking
lot near the north end of Freezeland Rd. We found few early migrants - Veery,
Blackburnian and Wilson's Warblers, the later singing a few times - and many
young local birds dominated by E. Towhee, Gray Catbird, Chipping Sparrow and
Indigo Bunting. Hawk observations were Sharp-shinned and Broad-winged.
On our way home we stopped at No. Fork Wetlands, Pr Wm Co, and scanned for
ducks. Mixed in with the 18 or so Wood Ducks and a few Mallards was a
Blue-winged Teal. There were so many Lily pads on the pond surface that many
more teal could easily be hidden away! The edge of the road held two dozen or
so Bobolink. A distant Broad-winged Hawk was also spied.
We finished up with a drive through the Nokesville area and spotted a migrating
Osprey.
