this & similar list did originate as rare bird alerts, replacing
telephone calling trees. for many of us that is still the primary
reason we read the list, with the note that we get information about
less unusual but yet particularly interesting birds, and "color
commentary" on those sightings. however, for many others, the list has
become a chatroom. that is a very different, tho equally appropriate,
function.
I note the many comments made that folks not interested in the chatroom
messages should simply delete before reading -- I agree, but note that
one cannot easily tell in most cases what one is about to find, and
sorting thru the one to find the other can be annoying when one has
dozens of messages each night [some of us are on more than one list
serve]. when one seeks information, it is common to put RFI in the
subject line. I don't know how to expand that convention to unusual
bird reports versus conversation, much less getting folks to maintain
the discipline, but its a thought.
