Greetings,
For the eighth consecutive year, I'm pleased to announce, albeit a tad
tardy, The Plains/Airlie Christmas Bird Count is scheduled to take place.
This
year's date is Sunday 18 December 2005. The count is largely in central
Fauquier County, with a small chunk of Prince William. The center of the
count is
east of Warrenton, and the circle stretches north to The Plains, south to the
Fauquier Landfill, east to Lake Manassas, and west of Wildcat Mountain to
Carter's Run.
We have a nice turnout typically, with fifty to sixty participants, and we
usually find about 100 species. We cover many seldom-birded locations
including Airlie, Clifton Farm, Wildcat Mountain, North Fork Wetlands, Bull Run
Mountain, Lake Manassas, Lake Brittle, The Fauquier Landfill, Great Meadow,
Huntley Farm, Saint Leonard's Farm, Harrison Road, as well as a couple golf
courses, other private areas and miles of rural roadsides. We follow the day
up
with a cozy gathering at Airlie, with Hard Times Cafe chili, good drink, and
other comely comestibles, toothsome treats, various victuals; anything to
please the peckish participants.
So, come one, come all, you've been invited. Audubon asks for five bucks,
and if you give it to me, I'll send it to them. Drop me at note at the email
address below if you're interested, and if you are unfamiliar to me, please
let me know a little about your birding experience as well as any familiarity
you have with Fauquier County. This is quite helpful when trying to put
people in the right places on count day.
Cheers,
Todd
