Good morning, VA Birders:
Just a note of thanks to all, especially Susan, Dick, Paula, Karen, Bart,
Robert A., David, Rich, Robert B., and Robyn! I hope I did not omit anyone
and that all of you received my emails in return. Your collective response
was heart-warming, and I THINK (?HA?) that all of us have solved the mystery
as well as we can. Kudos to Robyn who emailed that she had both heard AND
seen Yellow-winged Warblers making an aberrant call of five "buzz-buzz"
notes in Charlottesville and would not have believed it was their call
except for the fact that she was watching as well as hearing them do it.
she said it consisted of five buzzy notes which corresponds to the call I
heard (at least three times). Given that the Yellow-winged's call has a
"buzz" in the same pitch range as the notes I heard (as opposed to the other
popular suggestion of the Blackpoll which is too "squeaky"), I am assuming
the bird was a Yellow-winged. Sad for me because, as I explained to several
of you, I have not seen a Yellow-winged among the thirty-three warblers on
my life list, so I must forgo placing him on my yard/life lists until I do.
Thanks for the overwhelmingly generous responses--I truly appreciated it.
P.S.: This a.m. after two weeks of fruitless peering into the rain-forest
like canopy of my back yard, I was treated to about two minutes of great
viewing of a male Blackpoll as he foraged among the tulip poplar blossoms
outside my bathroom window (third floor up so I got a great look "down" on
him in the sunlight). He even cooperated long enough for me to "streak"
downstairs from my shower to get my binos and return to confirm it was a
Blackpoll and not a C. Chickadee! Also, yesterday I saw the first two N.
Cardinal fledges chasing "mom" around the shrubs as she made little
chortling calls to them. I also added Ground Hog to my mammals list--first
one that I have seen in twenty-eight years in my yard.
