Va-Birders: a great big thank you for all your information about FL and the
whooping cranes. Not only did we get down to Joe Overstreet Road - which is
a great place - but we saw a great diversity of birds. We also went about 5
more miles down the road to 3 Lakes Wildlife Management Area. What a great
spot! A nice 5 mile driving loop so no one had to get out of the car.
Perfect for a mixed group of birders and non-birders.
I got great looks at a whole bunch of birds. The highlights were a Northern
(or Crested) Caracara on the way down, sand hill cranes in the fields and,
yes, the whoopers in the WMA. Boy are they spectacular. I think everyone
in the party was amazed at their size up close. It is just hard to imagine
a 5 ft tall bird. Such a life treat to see 2 of the 100 birds in FL. WOW.
Oh...and then when we got back to my in-laws house in suburban Orlando and
there was a pair of sandhill cranes walking down the street like they owned
the place. I think there is a lesson in there somewhere about how you never
know what you have right under your nose but....I'm not sure :-)
All in all - a spectacular day birding. Again - thank you to everyone who
offered advice - it worked out better than I could ever have hoped.
Cheers, Janet Martin
