For those planning a trip to the Marriott Ranch tomorrow, I will add a few
notes. I was leaving as Leni was arriving. With my usual
compliment of goose bumps when observing a bird of this magnificence, I
watched the kite in flight from a little before noon to 12:15.
One birder on hand when I arrived said the bird had been around since about 10
or so. I don't think it was seen any earlier today, but I
stand open to correction.
I will never forget the sight of the kite picking off insects, probably
cicadas, from the treetops. Watching through a scope, I saw the
kite drop one of them before it could get it to its bill.
The folks at the Marriott Ranch could not have been more accommodating to
birders and and we all owe them a debt of gratitude. Spending
a night at the B&B might be one of the more pleasant ways to make the point.
Maybe they should provide bird walks for guests? It is a
beautiful property. Pick up a brochure as you leave.
