VA BIRDers,
I visited the Mason Neck SP overlook of Belmont Bay this morning and noted 2
male Surf Scoters far out on Belmont Bay, towards Occoquan NWR. Based upon the
ADC maps I consulted, the birds appeared to be foraging first in Fairfax Co and
then swam into Prince William Co, close to the two islands off Occ. NWR.
I also noted a male Bufflehead hanging out with several hundred Ruddy Ducks
just below the overlook, 300 or so scaup, many seemed to be Lesser but a few
Greaters were noted, an American Wigeon, and 4 American Coots.
For those looking for large concentrations of waterfowl, there are about three
to four thousand in Quantico Creek Bay, just east of Dumfries in Prince William
Co and visible from (the very few) look outs along Possum Point Rd. All the
dabblers, several species of divers, Pied-billed Grebes, coots, etc. were noted
there. A fine sight. Bring a scope and viewing on cloudy days reduces sun
glare. Or, perhaps an enterprising birder will find a spot on the south side
of the bay to escape the glare and tell us how to get to it!
