Thanks to Teta Kain for tracking down an ID on the strange hummer. Here is
the response.......Tom
enoughThanks for the call and for the fine photo. I have no doubt as to thespecies. This rather golden/brassy looking bird is a Ruby-throated. While
the plumage color is not all that common, I do capture and band many
immature birds in this color each summer. They are striking and certainly
can give you quite a start when they first appear.
Like all hummers, they will vocalize a lot and that alone should be
for most birders to sort them out as to species.to
Ruby-throated; this is based on size, body shape (archilochus), wing/tail
With great confidence, I am certain that the bird is an oddly plumaged
ratio, shape of the outside primaries and my prior experience with this
species.
Thanks for sharing this with me. This bird is a migrant and is likely
depart in fairly short order.for
Would you please forward this on the hummer host for me and thank them
letting me be a part of witnessing this strange little creature. If theynewsletter
will send me any postal mailing address, I will send them a free
and some other information on hummers.
Take care amigo, and God Bless.
