Hello VAbirders,
The sparrow set gets more antsy every day, chasing each other about almost
constantly. Juncos and White-throated Sparrows must have been driving our
Song Sparrow pair crazy, because they seem to have called in
reinforcements. Today there were 7 Song Sparrows bouncing around all at
once! That's a record for our little yard.
Our Crows third choice for a nest seems to be final for they've built a
big, solid looking nest in the last couple days. I'm happy because this
third location is the closest they've ever nested to our house. The tree
they chose is about 100' feet away from our window, so we have a good
view. Until the leaves unfold to hide it anyway.
My first-day-of-Spring treat was a Merlin that freaked out a flock of Rodos
about 40' above me as I walked through the Safeway parking lot on Maple
Avenue (Rt 123) near Park Street. Go get 'em Merlin!!!!!
And hot dog, my Jewelweed is already sprouting up. That seems mighty early!
Happy Spring everyone. :-)
