Well, I just got back from a week long trip to California to find out that I
had been missing an invasion of Red-necked Grebes here in Virginia. The
FLOCKS of RNGRs that I saw in California were among the highlights of my
trip (I had never seen more than 2 RNGRs together at one time and I had
several flocks of 6 plus in CA), so it was only fitting to have one swim by
my back deck this morning on the Nansemond River. Its only the second time
that I have been able to count this species from my yard.
I also noted some signs of spring from my yard that were not evident when I
left for California:
8 pairs of Osprey are actively courting & building nests on various
platforms, towers, etc. on the river.
Flocks of calling Laughing Gulls are moving daily up & down the river with
the other gull flocks.
Tundra Swan flocks were moving north en masse all night long.
