James Creamer's description of the 100 wood ducks at Dutch Gap flashing
their colors in the sun reminded me of a walk I had at Huntley Meadows
just before Christmas where there were a couple hundred grackles swarming
around in the trees just on the other side of the pond. As they came to
rest, the irridescent purple, blue and green highlights on their
shoulders and chests looked very much like shiny Christmas tree balls
adorning the bare branches.
The very best part of birding is the awe factor of gorgeous plummage in
great sunlight.
