It started off very BRRRiskly this morning, the last Tuesday of the hawkwatch
season; then the winds died and it was pretty mellow, since the temps were
40ish all day. Cloudy at the start, eventually turning into mostly blue. Jen
Folts was with me until 1:00 and Rob Hilton joined us and left shortly before
Jen did. Oh, ye of little faith! A little flurry as Jen was leaving of 4
redtails, and
right behind them an adult Northern Goshawk, which was considerate enough
to fly right OVERHEAD! What a bird! In the 2:00 hour there was another
gos, this one an immature and not nearly as viewable, but certainly
distinctive!
The hawks:
Bald Eagle - 1
Coopers - 1
Goshawk - 2
Shoulder - 3
Redtail - 25
UE - 1 (is this a first for Snickers, an unidentifiable eagle?)
TOTAL - 34
Other birds of interest were mainly waterfowl: 14 Snow Geese, 21 Canadas,
120 Tudra Swans, 2 loon sp. Then there were the 8-10 probably Evening
Grosbeaks!
Not too bad a day at all.

By the way, folks, on the way home, just east of Bluemont I saw an adult male
Scarlet Tanager. Stopped the car, pished him out and he was absolutely
splendid, but probably a bit chilly and hungry.
