I get my netting from Southern States, but I expect a lot of nurseries would
carry it. It's used to protect fruit trees from birds (how ironic) I'm not sure
about Home Depot. When you find it, make sure that it is the 1" squares. It's a
poly-type black netting. Then I take wire, any type will do, but I use a roll
of Florists' wire. I cut the netting so that it is about 4 feet long, double
folded . You get a lot in a package. Then I thread the wire in and out of the
netting, (on the folded top..forming a ruffle..like a ballet Tu-Tu. After your
ruffle is done, just pull it around the post, making sure that it's about a
foot or two down from the bottom of the box. Secure it by twisting the wire
really tight. If you think it might slip down the pole, use the old
standby..Duct Tape. the more ruffled it is, the better. Pull the netting so it
stands out nicely, and not packed too tightly. The snake has to become
entrapped in the ruffles as he comes up the pole. You can even make three loose
ruffles. I've had some big black snakes pull the whole ruffle down the pole
onto the ground with their weight.
I have a picture of one with a snake in it. I'll try and find it, so I can post
it.

I'm interested in what "gardening netting" you are using, where you get it or
what terms to use in describing it to someone at Home Depot. Sounds like a
winner to me. Easier than putting the umbrella or a 6" pipe on an existing
nestbox.
