Hello, birders.
RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS are back in numbers at Sky
Meadows SP after the winter's low numbers of this
species. I understand that last fall's poor acorn
crop in the region led many Red-headeds and
Red-bellieds to migrate in search of more food.
Yesterday (Sat. the 25th), I saw and heard several
Red-headeds at the park without even spending time in
the core area of their abundance, the Walnut Grove.
Other birds incl. a female AM. KESTREL and a singing
WORM-EATING WARBLER, and a female RUBY-THROATED
HUMMINGBIRD gathering nesting material from the
seedheads of flowers.
Grackles are flocking in No. Virginia, with a big
flock in my neighborhood yesterday evening and family
groups at Mason Neck SP today, both locations are in
Fairfax Co. PHOEBES have a nest with fledglings at
the Mason Neck SP Visitor Center. I'm told that
there's 4 youngins' but I could only see 2.

Fairfax, Va.
