Hello, birders.
Like Linda Millington (hi, Linda), I too birded Sky
Meadows on Sunday. My bird survey took me on a route
from the contact station to the Visitor's Center, and
then the North Ridge Trail all the way up to the
intersection with the Appalachian Trail. Then I
backtracked down the NR Tr. and took the Piedmont
Overlook Trail back to the VC and the contact station.
Highlight for me was 4 Ruffed Grouse drumming near the
top of the North Ridge Tr. and the App. Tr. It's only
the second or third time I've had them in or near the
park. An Osprey flew over and circled, I wonder if it
was the same one that Linda saw on the other side of
the park. I saw 2 Cooper's Hawks, one in the woods
and one over a field. The woodland bird uttered a
note, I thought I was hearing a Pileated Woodpecker
until I saw the bird. I also saw a Cooper's flying
near Rte. 66 on the way home.
The upper part of the North Ridge Trail was where the
action was. Besides the grouse, this area also held 3
male Cerulean Warblers, 2 of which I got great looks
at. I saw 1 Kentucky Warbler carrying nesting
material and heard 1 more singing. A couple of
Wh.-throated Sparrows were still around in addition to
numerous other birds.
A variety of warblers were heard and seen today, but
mostly in low numbers. The most common birds that day
were Indigo Bunting and Wood Thrush. 1 Wood was
carrying nesting material, also. 2 Bobolinks were
near the Visitor's Center. The male was singing
repeatedly.
