Hello, birders.
I birded the Bridle Trail at Sky Meadows SP on Sunday.
The weather was nice but windy after mid-morning.
The migration here wasn't as good as the outings I had
along the Potomac in the last week but it was still
fun and I had a lot of species. I got a lot of firsts
this weekend at both Great Falls and Sky Meadows.
Migrants and recent arrivals listed below:
-Osprey, 3
-B. Eagle, 1 imm.
-Wilson's Snipe, 1 near the fishing pond
-Gr. crst. Flycatcher
-E. Kingbird
-vireos - White-eyed, Blue-headed, Red-eyed
-House Wren in its usual spot where the woods kind of
spill over onto the other side of the trail, not far
from its beginning.
-Hermit and Wood Thrushes. I've had Hermits during
the past 4 every birding trips.
-Gr. Catbird
-warblers. Generally low numbers are found at Sky
Meadows. Yellow, B.t. Blue, Yellow-rumped (most
abundant with about 15 individuals), B.t. Green,
Prairie, Worm-eating, Ovenbird, Com. Yellowthroat
-Sc. Tanager
-sparrows incl. Grasshopper, Swamp, Wh.-throated
-Rose-br. Grosbeak
-Blue Grosbeak (purty!)
-Balt. Oriole
I was surprised that I had no Indigo Buntings. I
guess they'll be back any day now. Sc. Tanager, No.
ro.-winged and Tree Swallows were gathering nesting
material. Nuthatch in cavity with mate outside. Of
course, Tree Swallows in/near birdhouses everywhere.
Kestrels are nesting at the kestrel box near the
Visitor Center.
I heard a Yellow Warbler singing this evening when I
came home from work. We don't get a lot of migrants
here in our townhouse neighborhood so it was great to
be greeted by such a cheerful song when I got home. I
really miss having woods behind our house like I did
in the places where I grew up.
Can't wait for the VSO trips this weekend in the
Hampton Roads area!
Good birding,
S. Baron
