Hello, birders.

Some slow birding interspersed with some neat
sightings today.  Top birds: LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, BROWN
THRASHER and RED-HEADED WOODPECKER.

The LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was perched in a tree at the
start of the Bridle Trail this morning.  I saw the
bird several minutes later, this time perched on the
little footbridge that goes over the stream on the
nearby Shearman's Mill Trail.  I've never seen a
Shrike in this latter location before.  The bridge is
on the edge of the woods.

About a mile away, a BROWN THRASHER was quite a
surprising find along the woodland edge.  I stood in
one place for a few minutes before I even noticed the
bird, which was feeding less than 20' away.  It
searched for food for several minutes, turning over
dead leaves on the ground.  First park record for the
winter.  Perhaps the mild weather we've had for most
of the winter has kept it from moving farther south.

All woodpecker species were present, including a 1st
winter RED-HEADED far on the SE corner of the Bridle
Trail.  I've previously only seen this species once in
this general area of the park.  The solid black and
white of the adult had not yet come in, each color
wasn't quite solid but had some of the other in it.
The head appeared ashy gray, with red poking through,
especially on the throat and lower nape.

The first snowflake fell at 11:25, soon after I spied
the Red-headed.  Soon, the snow was falling steadily.

Sparrows were generally scarce on the Bridle Trail.  A
few species of raptors were around.  HERMIT THRUSHES
fed on berries.

Temp at start was just 22 F.  When I left at 1pm it
had climbed just one degree.  The cold weather was
refreshing, and the snow was great.

Enjoy the snow!  Finally!
