This fox was obviously infected with sarcoptic mange mites. This parasite is
common in red fox in northern Virginia and throughout the country. Since it
can't be treated in wild populations it is usually fatal. It also infects
other canine species like coyotes and gray wolves, but for some reason it is
not
reported in gray fox.
