Gordy Adamski and I took a tour of Augusta County this afternoon. Streams
were overflowing and low-lying fields were flooded. We found a single
Horned Lark in front of Target near Stuarts Draft. No Laplands. On Lipscomb
Rd. not far from Target we came across four ducks in a small spring-fed
pond next to the road. This was the only unfrozen pond and lake we came
across today. The four ducks were a pair of Lesser Scaup and pair of
Redheads.
The definite highlight of the trip was the Loggerhead Shrike on Rt. 705
before Smith's Pond and short distance from Lake Shenandoah at Boy Scout
camp. Most interesting thing about this shrike was the continual
pumping/wagging of its tail It was nonstop the entire 30+ minutes of
observation! In fact, when we first located it a short distance perched on
utility wire we initially thought Kestrel only because of the tail
pumping. We also noted what we considered to be a pronounced hook on end
of beak. We telephoned John Spahr at home to discuss field marks and
behavior of this bird.
Below is link to few pictures of the shrike.
