Hi Birders,
Today I was out and about in the COLD, looking for CA Gull Brewer's
Blackbirds,
Eurasian Wigeon & Greater White-fronted Goose. Dipped out on 'em all! BUT,
in
Nokesville area I ran into Jon Little and Laura Catterton; Laura had spotted
this
strange imm. swan, and so of course I stayed and this immature Trumpeter
made my day, so to speak. Laura did a good posting on it. Ken Bass noted
that the bird's bill resembled Canvasback's (shape, folks, not color, or skin
or
whatever); which I think is a good point. I hope he will get pictures to
pass on
to the Records Committee.
Anyhow, back to the subject of this email: Jon Little and Iwent to Fauquier
County
separately, it furned out, but met up and this spot near Rectorstown Here is
where
Carole Miller, of Marshall area, discovered several (5) Short-eared Owls a
week or
two ago. Andy Martin got the word and passed it around, and there was a
rather
eclectic group of us birders enjoying these birds to our hearts' content. We
got
"only" 4 birds, but they were wonderful. Also present were at least 2
Northern Harriers, indicating our arrival time (3:15ish) was time for the
changing of the guard.
After we separated, I went back to the pond on Harrison Rd (Jon & I dipped on
the
goose and duck there en route to the owls). No waterfowl at all and 4:30,
BUT I
did see a single Short-eared Owl. on a fencepost just about opposite the pond
where the ducks & geese gather. This bird was right by the road and I could
enjoy its skill with the eye makeup! Something else to look for on Harrison
Rd.
