The Lynchburg Bird Club went to Woodpecker Ridge on October 26, 2002.
Despite a forecast of 70 degrees and excellent birding weather, only six
members went on this field trip. The highlights of Woodpecker Ridge were
seeing 3 Hermit Thrushes together, 3 Lesser Yellowlegs on WoodDuck Pond and
a Blue-headed Vireo near the gardens. Try as we might, we could not rouse
our first White-crowned Sparrow of the season. After lunch and hawk
watching (Sharp-shinned and Red-tailed Hawks, Black and Turkey Vultures) on
the Myriam Moore Hawk watching platform at Woodpecker Ridge, most of the
group went on to bird some of the Roanoke area's birding hotspots.
Daleville Ponds and Carvin's Cove were nearly bird-less so we felt like we
hit the jackpot at the Roanoke Sewage Treatment Plant. We don't see many
shorebirds in the Lynchburg area, so we really enjoyed another Lesser
Yellowlegs, 2 Least Sandpipers (a rather late date for these), a Pectoral
Sandpiper, 3 Dunlin, and 2 American Pipits. We also studied at length a
male and female Rusty Blackbird on the ground next to the van, a life bird
for about half of the group. And there were a few ducks besides Mallards
present: 4 Green-winged Teal and a solitary Northern Shoveler. The complete
