Today, I joined Mike Boatwright and Andy Walker (Mike's friend from the
United Kingdom) to do some birding down at the shore. It was Andy's
first trip to the lower 48 so, despite the weather, he thoroughly
enjoyed "twitching" a number of life birds. Some good birds were had
throughout the day.
The first stop was First Landing State Park where we searched in vain
for the Clark's Grebe. However, we did get great looks at an
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and a BLUE-HEADED VIREO. Both birds were located
along the entrance road in the southern portion of the park.
On Island #1 of the CBBT, we observed a number of LONG-TAILED DUCKS,
both GREATER and LESSER SCAUP, NORTHERN GANNET and a single PURPLE
SANDPIPER.
Over at the Eastern Shore of Virginia NWR, a GRAY CATBIRD was
cooperative at the end of the boardwalk overlooking the marsh. At the
Ramp Road pond, there were a few WHITE IBIS, SNOWY EGRET and LITTLE BLUE
HERON. Large flocks of SNOW GEESE were seen flying around throughout
the afternoon.
Magotha Road produced 2 SEDGE WRENS, a MARSH WREN and an impressive look
at a PEREGRINE FALCON having lunch.
The pond at Cape Charles near the new housing development had a large
group of BRANT and a FORSTER'S TERN.
Two RED-NECKED GREBES were found near the concrete ships at Kiptopeke
State Park.
We ended the day back at the ESVNWR, where we observed a few AMERICAN
WOODCOCK. Two COOPER'S HAWKS, 4 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 5 BALD EAGLES AND 4
AMERICAN KESTRELS rounded out a great day had by all. Good birding.
