On Sunday June 27, BJ and I birded the western edges of Shenandoah Co. We were
looking for breeding evidence of some higher-altitude birds, especially
Mourning & Canada Warbler and a few others that we hoped for (but missed).
We started by driving up Judge Rye Road along Devil's Hole Mt. (south of Wolf's
Gap) and followed it to the WV line. We then went south (in VA) and drove to
the top of the ridge along Crooked Run Road.
Notable birds were:
Judge Rye Road:
Black-capped Chickadee - 5 or more with at least 1 fledging
E. Wood Pewee - 1 family
Great-crested Flycatcher - 1 family hunting together
Blue-headed Vireo - singing male
Chestnut-sided Warbler - 1 family with adults feeding at least 2 young
Hooded Warbler - singing males only
Indigo Bunting - female feeding young
Rose-breasted Grosbeak - 2 singing males
Raven - 1 squabbling family (common, yes, but I love them!)
Crooked Run Road:
Red-shouldered Hawk - 2
Black-capped Chickadee - only 1 singing male
Prairie Warbler - singing male
Broad-winged Hawk - 2 birds (1 flying right over car)
Blue-headed Vireo - 1 Very close singing male put on a nice show
Although we missed Mourning, Canada, Wormies, and a few others, it was still a
nice trip. Ovenbirds were not all that vocal, but we did get a few, as well as
a few Scarlet Tanagers - even Wood Thrushes were quiet. Nor did we see the Chat
we found on Tibbet's Knob in May. Waxwings were in a number of spots.
