I didn't receive word on the Rockingham Co. Scissor-tailed Flycatcher until
late last night.
Decided to get an early start and drove over bright and early this morning,
arriving at the location on Va Route 276 by 6:30 a.m. Fog was lifting.
I was later joined by Leonard Teuber and several others over the new three
hours including Dick Smith, Diane Holsinger, Elizabeth Ihle, George and
Rosemarie Harris, Allen and Pat Larner. (Sorry, but I should have jotted
down names of everyone.) Some stayed longer than others and I believe it
was approximately 15 minutes after Clair Mellinger (Sorry Clair.) when the
STFL appeared at 9:30 a.m. on its usual place on the utility wire at the
right bend exactly as described in the previous posts. (Approximately 20
minutes prior to it's appearance, I feel certain I saw it further off in
the distance atop a dead tree back behind the vineyard; definitely a
flycatcher with white underside that flew out and then back to same perch
before quickly flying off and not returning. Distance and lighting
prevented from seeing much detail.)
The flycatcher was observed actively feeding, working back south along the
road, making wide sweeps across the fields, returning to perch either on
the utility wires or fence. By 12:30 p.m. it was on the utility wires
running down the field beside the vineyard, approximately 2/10 mile back up
Rt. 276, across from house number 5868. The owner walked down the drive to
see what was of interest and he was able to observe this special visitor.
If you plan to come, be sure and check the fences and utility lines along
the road from the vineyard down to the bend.
Below is link to few pictures of the STFL taken today.
