To echo Clair Mellinger's sentiments about Saw-whets moving
through in good numbers this year I relay the following
incident from last night (Nov. 6).
The location: William & Mary campus, near the Law School in
some second-growth deciduous woods at the edge of a
brightly-lit parking lot (i.e., not very good habitat);
The cast: Ariel White, a saw-whet-o-phile and biology
graduate student;
The plot: on a whim Ariel opened up a few of the songbird
nets being used by the ornithology class for catching
sparrows and played a saw-whet tape at low volume - within 3
hours (at 10 PM) she had a saw-whet owl, which was then
enjoyed by as many students in the ornithology class as could
be extracted from their Saturday night revelry.
If an owl can be caught under these circumstances it boggles
the mind how many must have been moving through the area last
night.
